Oi to install fiber optic in Paraguay and offer corporate service

Brazilian carrier Oi (TNE) is expanding its business in neighboring Paraguay, where the Paraguayan National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) has authorized Oi to begin operations in the east of the country as a wholesaler, reported La Nación. The local press also noted that Oi intends to build a fiber optic ring in the department of Alto Paraná.

Oi told RCR Wireless News that the carrier reaches Paraguay through its subsidiary GlobeNet. After obtaining the necessary licenses, the company initiated the sale of telecommunications services including data, Internet and IP transit services for the corporate wholesale market.

Currently the major Paraguayan provisions are offered by Telefónica and Telecom Argentina.

GlobeNet has also presence in Colombia, where it obtained a license in August 2010 to start selling telecommunications services including data, Internet and IP transit, corporate services (including value-added services such as VoIP) and converged services. This expansion included a ring to provide secure connectivity to the wholesale market, as well as direct routes to Brazil, the United States, Venezuela and Bermuda. Globenet has also opened a office in Colombia and installed an international point of presence in Bogota.

Oi’s subsidiary GlobeNet provides data and transport services via double-submarine fiber optic ring linking Brazil, Bermuda, Venezuela, Colombia and the United States. Its network covers about 22,000 kilometres (about 13,700 miles) and has a capacity of 560 Gbps. A wholly owned subsidiary of Oi, GlobeNet is based in Boca Raton, Fla.

Recently, Oi announced that to meet increased user demand for high-speed Internet and applications, GlobeNet upgraded in 200 Gbps of capacity on its network, increasing from 360 Gbps to 560 Gbps of total network capacity. GlobeNet is working to expand from 560 Gbps to 1.2 Tbps based on the new 40 Gbps DWDM technology, with completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2012.
