Ads on smartphones could be getting simpler

The Mobile Marketing Association wants to bring some order to the world of mobile advertising — the trade group is proposing standard sizes for mobile ads. For banner ads created for smartphones, the proposed sizes are 300 x 250, 300 x 50 and 320 x 50. MMA says that major ad networks and publishers have already agreed to support these sizes.

With 82% of smartphone users reporting that they notice mobile ads, and 79% using their phone to help them shop, the potential for mobile advertising is enormous. The Mobile Marketing Association says that many companies that want to advertise are slowed down by the number of choices when it comes to ad sizes. MMA says there are currently about 60 different mobile ad sizes currently in use.

MMA is not yet ready to propose ad size standards for tablets, saying that market is still changing too rapidly. However, four sizes have already emerged as leading choices: 300 x 250, 468 x 60, 728 x 90 and 2024 x 90.

The MMA is inviting public comment on its proposal for the next 30 days. After comments are incorporated, all ad networks and publishers will have until the end of the first quarter to comply; MMA members tha comply will earn MMA Universal Mobile Ad Package Compliance stamps for online and in print material.
