Exponential growth of smartphones, cloud and mobility among IDC’s predictions for Latin America

IDC Latin America followed the company’s global predictions in forecasting that 2012 will be the year of mobile and cloud platform wars as IT vendors vie for leadership while the industry redefines itself. The market intelligence firm also added the consumerization of IT, which can change how decision making investments processes are made, is going beyond the direction of the CIO and the IT departments.

IDC noted that data transport continues to grow at exponential rates. The installed base of smartphones will grow 71% in 2012, when operators will move simultaneously towards 3G and 4G. Related to cloud services, IDC believes that in 2012 only one in five companies will not understand the concept of cloud services, and this sector will represent $280 million by the end of the year.

However, IDC also notes that the cloud computing space is in need of consolidation. While the basis of public cloud is being defined and cloud infrastructure is becoming common, the segment lacks a great way of automation and measurement to achieve an infrastructure-as-a-service model.

As a result of the growth rate of information (almost 50% more each year), IDC predicts a market of $370 million in Latin America in 2012, including hardware, software and management services associated with the data increase.

IDC also noted after a decade of growth and expansion of the middle class in the region, 2012 will continue as a year of expansion for the ICT industry, despite the volatility of the global economy. IDC predicts a 12.2% growth of IT investments for 2012, with the market exceeding $97 billion.

IDC also believes the tablet market will reach 2.1 million sold in 2012, but that those devices might not replace PCs. However, tablets could change the ecosystem and become highly complementary to the use of other devices as a result of a combination of new features and innovative and practical applications in companies.
