Colombian government’s plan to boost telecommunications in the country is set to increase competition among operators and expedite the deployment of 3G services, broadband Internet and MVNO operations. Colombia’s government has focused on improving many important issues, with the telecommunication sector amongst those main goals. That focus includes the Ministry of Technologies, Information and Communications’ (MinTIC) “Vive Digital” (Living Digital) plan launched by the government in early 2010, which is targeting the expansion of Internet access throughout the country.
Howeer, the challenges are great. The country must improve its digital ecosystem, which include improvements to infrastructure, services, applications and terminals.
Among Vive Digital’s goals are plans to quadruple the number of Internet connections across Colombia. In the first quarter 2010, there were 2.2 million Internet connections across wired and wireless services, with the goal to increase that to 8.8 million connections by 2014. Those growth plans are moving along as Colombia’s broadband connections grew 91.1% between August 2010 and June 2011, jumping to 4.1 million connections.
