1. While the real impact of the Supreme Court of India’s 2G case verdict will be felt in the months to come, initial media reports suggest that around 10,000 jobs in the telecom sector are likely to be impacted due to the court order.
A report in the Times of India states that operations in the canceled licenses involve an estimated 4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect jobs, in areas like telecom sales, customer support and tower management and maintenance.
The company expected to be most impacted will be Uninor, which employs more than 2,000 people in India. Etisalat (500 people approximately) and S-Tel (200 people approximately) will be impacted to a lesser extent as they are yet to start their services and have fewer employees at the moment.
2. A recent news report in the Economic Times revealed that as many as six top executives of mobile phone companies were hunting for new jobs.
“The sector that was once touted as the symbol of India’s growth story, grapples with mounting losses and stagnant revenues,” the news report stated.
3. According to recent reports in the Indian media, two senior executives working in the telecom sector are leaving the companies they work for.
Syed Safawi, President of the Wireless Division of Reliance Communications, will leave the company by the end of February as his contract with the company expires.
Atul Bindal, a former president of leading telecom company Bharti Airtel’s mobile business in India, has quit.
