Brazilian regulatory agency Anatel released the country’s latest cellphone numbers showing that at the end of January the country reached 245.2 million mobile lines, which was a 1.22% increase compared to December. However, Anatel said the absolute number of new customers (2.9 million) was the largest recorded in the month of January over the last 13 years. The country’s teledensity reached 125.29 connections per 100 inhabitants.

Regarding technology, mobile broadband (2G and 3G) connections totaled 50.8 million, of which W-CDMA (3G) accounted for 17.62% of the total base and data terminals accounted for 3.09%. GSM (2G) remained the biggest portion of that base with 78.68%.
Vivo, which is part of Spain’s Telefonica group, continued to lead the market with nearly 72.9 million customers and 29.73% market share. TIM was No. 2 with 26.56% market share (65.1 million customers), followed by America Movil’s Claro with 24.78% market share (60.8 million customers) and Oi with 18.62% market share (45.7 million customers). Algar Telecom’s CTBC had .27% market share, while Sercomtel totaled just .03% at the end of January.
