Brazil tops 250M mobile subscribers, 3G connections grew 10%

Brazil’s telecom regulator Anatel reported that the country has surpassed 250 million mobile subscribers in March, reaching a penetrations rate of 128%. Of the country’s 250.8 million active mobile lines, 52 million are 3G connections, which was a 10.11% increase compared with the previous month.

GSM (2G) continues to represent the majority of connections at just under 79% of the market, while W-CDMA (3G) connections were just over 17% of the market and data terminals were at 3.38%. Prepaid continues to dominate, accounting for nearly 82% of payment options.

Vivo remained the nation’s largest operator with 29.8% market share, followed by Tim (26.8%), Claro (24.6%), Oi (18.5%), CTBC (.27%) and Sercomtel (0.03%).
