Tekelec sees more opportunities in HSPA+ than LTE in Latin American market

Several Latin American telecom operators are already launching LTE services or trials, and more auctions are scheduled, but LATAM still lags behind some other markets. That’s why the mobile broadband solutions company Tekelec is also increasing HSPA+ rollouts to boost its participation in the region.

During an interview with RCR Wireless News at Informa’s LTE Latin America event last week, Tekelec VP Houck Reed also explained the demand for more control policies tools, software that helps carriers control policies they have set. “We have a lot of deployments in policies,” he said. Policy solutions tools are required to manage data demand, which keeps growing across the region.

The exponential growth of mobile demand and the increase of data traffic were also key points noted by Tekelec at last year’s Futurecom event. At that time Mauro Vicente, director at Tekelec, explained that the company expects the World Cup and Olympic Games to positively impact revenues in Brazil. Vicente had also detailed a recent extension to TIM’s agreement.

The question, Reed emphasized, is how carriers will manage data demand, and he also noted that even more difficult than managing data is driving the signaling storm, boosted by the impact of LTE devices. The ‘signaling storm’ follows the rapid growth in subscribers, devices and applications, and in some instances, signaling traffic is exceeding data traffic.

Reed also noted Tekelec granted several number portability projects across the region. Some countries, such as Colombia, Chile and Panama, have recently launched mobile portability.
