In the same week that Spanish telecom giant Telefónica announced a $502 million (Bs 2.16 billion) investment in its Movistar unit in Venezuela, the Argentinian government fined it about $41.7 million (185 million pesos) for a massive service outage there in April.
In Argentina, Planning Minister Julio De Vido said the fine will set an example and serve as a warning to other wireless providers that such outages won’t be tolerated. In April, Telefónica’s wireless unit Movistar left some 18 million clients without phone and data service for several hours because of technical problems.
In Venezuela, Telefónica CEO Michael Duncan told the local paper El Universal that investments will take place this year and will be focused on expanding Movistar’s infrastructure in the country and increase data capacity.
