BROOMFIELD, Colo. – What do you call a gathering of the top technologists in cloud computing, mobile, APIs, and big data? Why, “Glue” of course! Because it’s all about how the biggest trends in technology today are coming together.
Gluecon, as the event is dubbed, is now in its third year, and the uber-geeks of the Internet industry just keep returning for more – in even bigger numbers this year. Who wants to miss out on that latest knowledge tidbit that could make the all difference in a new product or startup?
The two-day event kicked off Wednesday morning with an agenda that would make any respectable developer drool. But to get things rolling, the organizers invited the “Cloud Camp” people to hold one of their events the night before the event officially began.
More than 70 developers, architects, CTOs and cloud technologists converged to engage in what is essentially an extended ad-hoc discussion of what’s on their minds right now: the tough technical problems, the controversial issues of the day, the changing technology landscape as they see it. All things they need to chew over with their professional peers – not their bosses.
So, what topics drew discussions? After an expert panel made up of senior people from Red Hat, Netflix, CloudSoft and others, the assembled geeks wanted to talk about:
–Enterprise cloud vs. consumer cloud.
–How do you avoid vendor lock-in?
–Cloud security, especially in healthcare.
–Platform as a service.
–What will happen if APIs are copyrightable?
–Dev ops in a post-PaaS world
–Can dev and ops ever get along?
–Which NoSQL software will work in the cloud?
The group then broke up into breakout sessions to further discuss those topics.
Red Cloud’s Larry Carvalho said he was more than impressed with the quality of the attendees and the high level of discussion. “Nowhere outside Silicon Valley have I seen this quality,” he said.
