C Spire updates data-only plans

Regional operator C Spire Wireless announced new data plans focused on customers in need of mobile broadband access when outside of a Wi-Fi hot spot. The cellular component of the “Choice” data plans include pricing based on days of use and a separate price structure based on a bucket of data usage.

The day pricing begins at $15 that provides 100 megabytes of data over a seven-day period; moves to $30 for 300 Mb over a 14-day period; and tops out at $50 for 1 gigabyte of data over a 30-day period. To access these options, customers will have to pay a $5 fee per month to keep their account open, with the actual data needs purchased on an as-needed basis.

The bucket plans, which don’t require begin at $20 per month for 1 GB of data; moves to $30 for 3 GB; and tops out at $50 per month for 5 GB. Overage is charged at $10 per GB for the $30 and $50 plans, and at $20 per GB for the $20 plan.

Devices compatible with the plans include wireless modems and mobile hotspot devices. For the per-day plans, the device pricing runs between $110 and $120 depending on the device. The devices are free with the bucket plans.

The cellular service is currently limited to the carrier’s CDMA-based 2G/3G network, though C Spire is working to launch LTE services later this year.
