Where the jobs are now

Detroit, the Atlantic Seaboard, and the Northwest are among the best places to find a job in technology now, and wireless companies are hiring actively in all of these areas. The cities below have the highest number of tech job openings as a percentage of total people employed, as calculated by Simply Hired.

Baltimore, Maryland. Telecomcareers currently lists 169 jobs in Maryland. One of the largest employers in the Baltimore area is Hunt Valley’s TESSCO (TESS), maker of wireless communications products for network infrastructure, site support, and mobile broadband networks.

Detroit, Michigan. Verizon, AT&T and Cisco are among the companies hiring in Michigan on Telecomcareers. Software-as-a-service for the manufacturing industry is also a growth industry in Detroit; Plex Online is a provider of cloud solutions for enterprise resource planning (ERP) in the electronics and heavy manufacturing industries that has been recognized for its high level of employee engagement and commitment.

Charlotte, North Carolina. American Tower, AT&T, Cisco and Verizon Wireless all have North Carolina jobs posted on Telecomcareers. The job site currently lists 442 jobs in the state, with a large concentration in the Charlotte/Research Triangle area.

Portland, Oregon. Portland companies offer employees many of the same opportunities available in Silicon Valley, without the high cost of living. Intel Oregon is the largest private employer in the area, and currently lists 479 job openings. Portland also has a robust software development ecosystem that is benefitting from the explosion in mobile applications. According to Portland tech recruiting firm EnGn, “There is a race for technical talent in Portland and the Pacific Northwest that we have not seen since the internet economy of the late 90’s.”

Seattle, Washington As the cultural hub of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle has much to offer employees. Seattle was home to wireless pioneer Craig McCaw, and today it is home to Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon (AMZN), two corporate giants that have set their sights on mobile. CenturyLink (CTL) is also a major Seattle employer, having purchased service provider Qwest Communications last year.
