Colombia’s Emcali obtains pay-TV license

The municipal-owned company Empresas Municipales de Cali (Emcali) has been granted the concession and license to provide subscription TV service. With this license, Emcali will join the so-called “triple play” service market, which includes telephony, broadband and subscription television under an IPTV model. Based in Cali in Colombia, Emcali already provides water, telecommunications and electricity services.

According to the announcement by the National Television Authority’s (Antv), Emcali will be allowed to provide television service throughout Columbia for the next 10 years. Last February, Emcali announced its plan to launch an IPTV service. The company has been testing technology and structure packages for the launch.

Antv said the move aims to open the subscription television market and give users new service choices.

On July 11, Antv established the requirements for public telecommunication service providers to obtain subscription television licenses. Emcali submitted its request, and after evaluation, the authority’s board approved the award.

The contract will be signed in the next few days in Cali.
