PBX market down as enterprises remain cautious on spending

The PBX market is down slightly on a global basis in the second quarter of 2012, both sequentially and year-over-year, and enterprises are generally remaining cautious with spending on telephony equipment, according to the latest Infonetics Research report. In 2Q12, the enterprise PBX phone system market (TDM, hybrid and pure IP PBXs) totaled U.S.$2 billion, down 2.6% from the previous quarter and down 1.4% from the second quarter 2011.

However, the research firm stated that PBX system sales in North America are up 5% from the previous quarter and up 6.4% from the 2nd quarter of last year. In addition, Latin America continues to be a small beacon of light as the region’s economies continue to experience growth and new business creation.

Nevertheless, the overall market was down for the quarter compared 1Q12 (QoQ) and compared to the same period of a year before (2Q11), on a quarter-over-quarter basis; VoIP gateway revenue is up 14.7%.

“We continue to remain conservative for the full year of 2012, expecting modest growth over 2011. The remainder of the year will show growth as is typical for the second half,” Diane Myers, Infonetics Research principal analyst for VoIP and IMS told RCR Wireless News.

Regarding regional forecasts, Myers noted that in 2Q12 North America had the strongest growth with YoY and QoQ growth, and Latin America had strong demand over the past 18 months, although it is a relatively small region. “While businesses may have an interest in updating systems many are holding off—particularly small and mid-market customers,” she said.

In the vendor market, Cisco and Avaya continue to battle over the enterprise VoIP and TDM equipment market. “It is still a tight battle between these top two companies. Cisco has actually maintained its leadership for the last four quarters. But it is always tight every quarter,” Myers explained.  She also noted the consultant firm includes TDM and VoIP under PBX but counts the unified communication portions separately.

Noteworthy vendors posting growth in the down quarter include Microsoft, Samsung, ShoreTel, and Mitel, all with double-digit sequential growth. “Avaya and Cisco are the dominant vendors but others had a very good 2Q12, notably ShoreTel and Mitel. Additionally, Microsoft continues to make progress in the telephony space with its strength in UC through Lync,” Myers said.
