Putting in ink what it has been touting for more than a year, the Rural Cellular Association today has altered its brand by ditching the long-used RCA name and now going by the title of the Competitive Carriers Association.
In making the change, CCA noted the move signals an “evolution” of the wireless industry.
The move also seemed appropriate as over the past couple of years the trade association has welcomed nationwide operators Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA into its ranks, as well as larger regional players in MetroPCS and Clearwire. The only significant domestic carriers missing from CCA’s Rolodex are Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility, which also happen to be the markets two largest carriers.
CCA said it will continue advocating for initiatives it claims will enhance competition across the mobile space, including device and network interoperability, data roaming, Universal Service Fund reform and broader spectrum availability. The move also comes just weeks ahead of the association’s fall trade show set for Las Vegas.
“Over the past several years, the wireless industry has seen increased consolidation and the emergence of a market duopoly. In light of the duopoly and the threat of further industry consolidation, our members – both large and small – all share a common goal,” said Steven Berry, president and CEO of CCA. “CCA will continue to work with policymakers to ensure competitive policies are adopted, which will benefit consumers, the economy and job growth. The organization will continue to be a home for competitive carriers through our advocacy efforts, trade shows, and industry ecosystem development programs.”
The name change also furthers Berry’s aggressive re-positioning of the former Rural Cellular Association that began when he took over the head position at the trade association in late 2009.
