Futurecom 2012: Brazil’s leaders optimistic on LTE deployment, adoption

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil’s public authorities claimed this is the right time to deploy LTE and move onto the next telecommunication technology, during the opening session of the Futurecom event (read all pieces), held this week in Rio de Janeiro.

“We auctioned LTE licenses exactly on the right time, because we do not want to wait until the technology is mature to start using it,” said Brazil’s communication minister Paulo Bernardo, adding that carriers will deploy LTE while continuing to improve their 3G coverage. Bernardo also said he expects LTE adoption to happen very fast across the country.
“It is a very important moment for Brazil and Latin America. We are in process of deploying LTE,” added João Rezende, president of Brazil’s telecommunications regulatory agency Anatel.

Rezende noted Anatel has worked to increase transparency and to secure telecom service quality. Earlier this year, Anatel banned three mobile operators from selling new lines due to the high rate of customer complaints.

Indeed, quality assurance has been on the government agenda with demands for carriers to provide better services for its subscribers. “There are some issues such as the service quality, the need of expansion to poor neighborhood and rural areas, signal faults and lack of coverage,” federal deputy Eduardo Azeredo pointed out, noting the need for more political measures.
