Prepayd jumps on BYOD train, to support Sprint Nextel devices

The prepaid wireless space continues to witness innovative offerings designed to provide a unique experience for consumers. The latest to take that approach is Prepayd Wireless that said it will begin allowing customers to bring Sprint Nextel devices onto its service, a move made easier by the fact the Prepayd offering runs across that carrier’s network.

Prepayd said the program is open to select devices and that some features of the device might not work properly when activated through the prepaid offering.

“We are strong believers that our conservative service prices matched with our new liberal handset policy will attract new subscribers and retail partners.” noted Josh Berman, president of PrepaYd Wireless, in a statement.

Prepayd entered the prepaid space earlier this year touting a no-contract offering across Sprint Nextel’s CDMA and WiMAX networks. The carrier, which is a sister company of prepaid credit card provider Bank Freedom, offers plans beginning at $35 per month for unlimited voice calls, text messaging and 411 information services, up to $60 per month that throws in unlimited 3G and WiMAX data services as well as a GPS locator service. Devices that do not include WiMAX capabilities cap out at a $50 per month plan. Prepayd notes that its data service is unlimited, though it reserves the right to cut off usage or throttle speeds if consumers get out of hand.

The company currently offers a handful of smartphones and basic phones from HTC, LG, Sanyo, Samsung, Kyocera and Huawei.

Sprint Nextel earlier this week expanded its support of mobile virtual network operators with the launch of its Mobile Broadband on Demand service that will allow partners to rent devices compatible with the carrier’s 3G and WiMAX-based networks to consumers. The carrier noted the offering is targeted at “companies in the international, retail, travel and hospitality industries.”
