MWC 2013: Carriers find customers who aren’t subscribers

Mobile operators hear a lot about monetizing subscribers with new services, but now they are also finding ways to earn revenue from consumers who are not their subscribers. “Mobile carriers assume that every device and user they serve must be a subscriber,” said Torbjorn Ward, CEO of Aptilo Networks, a provider of Wi-Fi, WiMAX and LTE service management. “However, there could be a huge audience of “non-subscribers” to reach.”

“In an IP world you often have subscribers that aren’t connected to your network, but they’re still subscribers of services inside your network, said Andy Ory, CEO of Acme Packet, which recently inked a deal to be acquired by Oracle. Acme has just announced a partnership with CounterPath that will combine Acme’s session border controllers with CounterPath’s software to help operators extend their over-the-top offerings. “We built technology that can go into applications that people write themselves and put onto handsets. These folks can be anywhere in the world, and they can tunnel in an https way, through the OTT Internet back into the service provider’s trusted IMS network, where they can offer them services. So services can be delivered to subscribers that aren’t connected to you, which really is the future when you think about IT.”
