MetroPCS has again tapped infrastructure giant Ericsson to bolster its network operations, announcing a deal for Ericsson to supply equipment and services to enhance its evolved packet core network. MetroPCS noted the deal will help boost the carrier’s mobile data, voice over LTE and rich communication services.
As part of the deal, Ericsson said it will serve as the project’s “prime integrator with responsibility for design, installation and commissioning and post-launch customer support.” The company said the deployment will include its Evolved Packet Gateway on the SSR 8000 suite of Smart Service Routers; Mobility Management Entity on the Ericcson Blade Systems, MkVIII platform; and integrated multu-technology operations support systems.
MetroPCS’ current network revolves around its legacy CDMA-based offering and its recently installed LTE network that Ericsson helped the carrier install. The carrier has said it plans to turn off its CDMA network sometime in the 2015 time frame.
MetroPCS announced a deal early last year with Ericsson for the installation of microwave backhaul equipment.
The closer ties with Ericsson should also play into MetroPCS’ pending merger with T-Mobile USA as Ericsson has been a long-time vendor to T-Mobile USA, having announced last year that it would be providing its AIR solution for the carrier’s ongoing LTE deployment.
