Mobile Minute 5/10: ESPN to the rescue?

Carriers who want over-the-top players to help foot the bill for wireless data may be making some progress. The Wall Street Journal reports that ESPN has talked to one carrier about helping to pay for data.

Today’s Mobile Minute:

  • ESPN may be coming to the rescue of sports fans who go over their mobile data limits. The Wall Street Journal reports that ESPN has talked to at least one major wireless carrier about paying for data so that minutes spent watching ESPN would not count toward a customer’s monthly limits. This is not a done deal – and if it does happen you can probably expect a few more ads on ESPN to help the network pay for all that data.
  • ESPN is definitely interested in working with the carriers. The general manager of ESPN Mobile addressed the Competitive Carriers association last fall. He said ESPN gets about 17 million mobile visits a day, and that the average user spends about 10 minutes a day with ESPN’s content.
