CTIA 2013: Globecomm notes progress in rural LTE deployments

LAS VEGAS – Globecomm Systems’ moves to offer an alternative to rural carriers rolling out LTE services marked some success as the company announced progress with a trio of operators.

Globecomm, which offers 3G and LTE core and gateway solutions, said that Texas-based Evolve Broadband had completed LTE trials and plans to continue its LTE build out; Indigo Wireless has renewed its hosting contract for three years to expand services from 2G to 3G and plans to trial LTE next month; and Missouri-based Chariton Valley plans to add LTE services for its home customers.

Evolve said it plans to build out service in 13 counties using approximately 30 cell sites with the help of Globecomm and Ericsson. Chariton Valley noted that Globecomm hosts its GSM, CDMA and its plans for LTE services, which is separate from the carrier’s partnership with Verizon Wireless’ LTE in Rural America program.

Globecomm claims its hosted LTE core and converged packet gateway solution lower the cost of deployment for rural carriers, which has become a hot topic for carriers looking to remain competitive against LTE rollout plans from larger rivals.

RCR Wireless News hosted a webinar on the topic of LTE deployment options for rural carriers.
