iOS gets Microsoft Office 365

Microsoft has launched an Office app on iOS, available only to users who buy a subscription to Office 365. Users will be able to create Word documents and Excel spreadsheets on their iPhones and iPads, and view and edit PowerPoint presentations.

Apple says the Office 365 app is optimized for the iPhone 5 and is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad and iPad mini, and the iPod touch (5th generation). Users need iOS 6.1 or better in order to download it.

Office 365 for Windows users will be able to sync their personal computers with their iPhones so that they can quickly open recent documents from their pc on their phones, and even resume reading them wherever they stopped when they were on their computers. Documents saved in SkyDrive and SharePoint can also be accessed on the iPhone and documents created on the phone can be saved there.

According to some reports the Office 365 app does support creation of new PowerPoint decks, but Microsoft says users will be able to do some editing of their PowerPoint slides. Microsoft Office blogger Pat Fox writes, “You can review your slides and edit speaker notes, move and hide slides, and make text edits directly from your phone.”
