Boingo Wireless beat expectations for the quarter, reporting revenue of $26.2 million, up from $24.3 million for the second quarter of 2012.
The company reported an overall net loss of $0.4 million, much less than the $1.5 million loss for the previous year’s second quarter.
“Our positive momentum continued through the second quarter, with all three major lines of business— retail, wholesale, and advertising — contributing to our overall performance,” said David Hagan, Boingo’s CEO. He said that the company’s retail and advertising business over-performed during the quarter to drive the revenues gains. “Stability in the wholesale sector, especially as it relates to revenue generated by DAS upgrade projects for the carriers, helped amplify the retail and advertising gains,” Hagan added.
Boingo recently launched a new product that allows advertisers to reward users with free Wi-Fi access in exchange for downloading their iOS or Android mobile apps.
“Strategic initiatives around DAS and advertising saw especially notable traction, as we continue to grow those lines of business,” Hagan said. “Specifically, we finalized three contracts to deploy neutral-host, multi-carrier DAS networks at theMemphis International Airport, the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska and across sections of the University of Arizona campus.”
Boingo expects revenues for the third quarter to be in the range of $26.5 million-$28.5 million.
