South Korean communications giant SK Telecom said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rohde & Schwarz to jointly research and develop next-generation antenna technologies. The deal calls for the two companies to “create a test bed for active antenna system,” which they claim to be a “core technology in the next-generation antenna system, for performance verification,” with Rohde & Schwarz providing SK Telecom with signal generator and radio network analyzer equipment.
Financial details of the deal were not announced.
SK Telecom in late June launched commercial LTE-Advanced services across portions of South Korea, providing network speeds twice as fast as its current LTE network, which was launched in 2011. The carrier said the network provides theoretical downlink speeds up to 150 megabits per second by combining a pair of 10 megahertz carriers to form an effective 20 megahertz channel. That combination is made through SK Telecom’s use of carrier aggregation and coordinated multi point, with plans to add enhanced inter-cell interference coordination to the mix next year.
Rohde & Schwarz in June introduced a new signal and spectrum analyzer with a range claimed to be double that of the previous product, from 160 MHz to 320 MHz. The company said its new R&S FSW is the only signal and spectrum analyzer on the market that can process signals in that bandwidth; the analyzer is aimed at wideband digital communications and radar systems.
