Telecom Analytics: CIOs help carriers face challenges; big data spending to hit $114B in 2018

As telecom operators face increased competition not only from other carriers but also from over-the-top players, RCR Wireless News takes an in-depth look at what chief information officers (CIOs) can do to help telcos become more competitive.

The recently released feature report explores CIOs’ greatest challenges and concerns; the technologies CIOs are choosing for telecom operators; and the most important IT projects conducted by operators. In addition, the report also addresses diversity among telecom CIOs and within the IT environment which has traditionally been a predominantly male space. Be sure to download this free report.

Big data transforming companies—A survey conducted by UBM Tech, in partnership with Nemertes Research, shows that nearly 60% of companies with big data initiatives are seeing transformative changes. The joint survey polled more than 350 IT professionals. Of the survey respondents, 39% have undertaken big data initiatives, or will by the end of the year, and another 13% are planning big data initiatives in 2014.

Of those with current initiatives, 80% are bringing existing database vendors (chiefly IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle) forward as strategic partners for big data, even though most are also using open source solutions. More than 70% are using open source tools, often with commercial services or add-ons wrapped around them from newer big data vendors (such as Cloudera, 10gen and Tableau).

Big market—new big data market forecast by ABI Research points out that global spending on big data by organizations will exceed U.S.$31 billion in 2013. The spending will grow at a CAGR of 29.6% over the next five years, reaching $114 billion in 2018. The forecast includes the money spent on internal salaries, professional services, technology services, internal hardware and internal software.

Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen estimates that salaries account for half of the current spending on big data initiatives with the other half allocated to vendor products and services.
