Apple says it sold a record 9 million new iPhones this weekend. That includes sales of the 5S and the 5C. The company also says 200 million devices have downloaded iOS 7.
At the other end of the spectrum, BlackBerry is confirming that it will cut about 40% of its workforce. 4,500 people will lose their jobs, and BlackBerry says it lost at least $950 million in its second quarter. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal both report that former BlackBerry CEO Mike Lazaridis is raising money to try to take the company private. Meanwhile, BlackBerry delayed the launch of its BlackBerry Messenger app for iOS and Android this weekend.
And another report of job cuts — After fighting hard to win control of Clearwire, Sprint is letting most of the employees go. Sprint says about three quarters of the people who worked at Clearwire before the acquisition will have to go.
