Futurecom 2013: Claro, Bradesco joint venture releases first m-payment solution

RIO DE JANEIRO — The first m-payment product following a joint venture between Claro Brazil and Bradesco, one of the largest banks in Latin America, debuted at the Futurecom event this week. The joint venture named MPO (Mobile Payment Operator) was first announced last November.

The new product, called Meu Dinheiro Claro, is a prepaid card focused on serving people who don’t have bank accounts, especially those who own prepaid mobile phones. The card is tied to a cellphone line from Claro, and it can be used to make purchases, transfer money between people who have the card and withdraw money from Bradesco ATMs, among other facilities.

There is no cost to subscribe to the service, but customers pay 69 cents to transfer money and $2.29 to withdraw cash from machines.

The pilot will begin in some cities in the Rio de Janeiro and Goiás states. The areas were chosen according to Claro’s market share penetration, said Alexandre Olivari, Claro’s director of value added services.
