Futurecom 2013: TIM’s goals for 2014 include small cells, 3G and LTE expansion

RIO DE JANEIRO — Although there are some concerns regarding TIM’s future in Brazil, following negotiations between Telefónica and TIM’s parent company Telecom Italia, TIM president Rodrigo Abreu outlined some of the carrier’s goals at the Futurecom event this week. Abreu also highlighted the need for the telecom industry to become more innovative and to answer customers’ needs.

Abreu said TIM is focusing on 3G and LTE expansion, fiber-to-the-subscriber, mobile broadband, mobile core IP and small cells. The carrier is planning a major roll-out of small cells starting next year, including Wi-Fi, picocell and femtocell technology. The aim is to offload 3G traffic, starting with major cities.

In addition, TIM plans to expand fiber to antenna in about 50 to 60 cities and improve rural coverage. Also, the company is interested in bidding in Brazil’s 700 MHz frequency band auction, which is expected to take place next year.

TIM’s major pillars for growth are: infrastructure and the quality of the network; improving strategy and offerings; institutions relationships; and in-company improvements, focusing on people, culture and value. “The network ecosystem is much more complex today than it was in the past because the IT component is higher,” Abreu said.
