Major SDN vendors Part II: Dell, Jeda, ADARA, PLUMgrid

Software-defined networking has become a vital part of many IT arrangements, creating new opportunities for organizations in the SDN and virtualization industry. In a continuation from yesterday's story, here are a few more of the top SDN vendors impacting the sector:

Dell
Dell has not been shy in supporting the SDN technology market, and calls the technology the future of networking, CRN noted. As part of its push to further SDN development in the company, Dell recently acquired a number of businesses, including Force10 Networks, and is quickly becoming a top contender in the SDN vendor industry. Even three years ago, the organization was keen on strategizing its position in the sector, with a presentation at the 2011 Open Networking Summit that proclaimed Dell as a key participant in the expanding total addressable market for SDN systems.

Jeda Networks
Although Jeda Networks is a relatively new face in the technology trade, the organization's solutions are quickly making it a top SDN vendor. The company recognized issues connected with virtualization adoption and the ability of storage networks to keep up with new systems, according to CIO. Jeda is currently seeking to solve these problems by developing a software program to carry out traditional storage tasks. The technology would essentially link storage equipment with servers and the endpoints that access content. Furthermore, Jeda's Fabric Network Software-based controller can effectively maintain standard 10GB Ethernet switches, which prevents the need for additional SAN hardware.

ADARA Networks
This organization immediately set itself apart within the SDN industry by presenting a channel strategy right away. ADARA's Horizon SDN platform allows users to utilize an Ecliptic SDN controller, Axis vSwitch and SoftSwitch, as well as a Cloud Computing Engine and other advanced components. The platform "enables seamless sharing of data across systems and claims to cut out cumbersome re-coding processes," streamlining technology arrangements in a range of applications, according to CRN. The company also introduced its ADARA Advantage Partner Program in 2011 to further bolster the SDN industry.

PLUMgrid
Another top SDN vendor is PLUMgrid, which was founded in 2011. The company focuses on SDN and virtualization technology by providing a virtual networking overlay solution leveraging the VXLAN standard for Layer 2 network abstraction across a LAN. The PLUMgrid Virtual Network Infrastructure Platform establishes VXLAN virtualization and allows for the virtualization of Layers 2 through 7, according to CIO. This solution enables business users to duplicate physical network infrastructure operations in a virtual setting without adding new hardware or changing existing systems.
