Ciao Telecom latest to target unique MVNO position

Mobile virtual network operators continue to bring unique pricing plans to market, with the latest venture being offered up by Ciao Telecom. The company said it has begun beta testing a $10 per month, unlimited data, messaging and voice service tapping into Sprint’s CDMA and LTE network.

Dallas-based Ciao said the offering will require customers to allow the company to stream “targeted mobile app advertising on their lock-screen” in return for the subsidized price.

The company currently advertises no-contract plans beginning at $35 per month for unlimited domestic voice and messaging, up to $60 per month with the addition of unlimited data. Currently only a single device is advertised from the company in the form of HTC’s Evo smartphone that was initially released in 2010. Ciao noted that the new offering would include access to Sprint’s LTE network, thus likely a new device will also be thrown into the mix.

The firm, which was founded in 2011 in Silicon Valley, initially targeted the prepaid space in emerging markets. Ciao said it also plans to launch a no-contract IP TV service by the end of the year, with the set-top-box solution providing the same live channels that cable offers.

Companies such as FreedomPop, Republic Wireless and Scratch Wireless have recently entered the mobile space, offering up cut-rate pricing for unlimited services, often times tapping into Wi-Fi connectivity.
