Mobile Minute:
Two Los Angeles television stations have been sharing the same broadcast frequency as part of a test. Broadcasters are interested in so-called channel sharing because it may enable them to free up some spectrum that could then be sold to wireless operators, with part of the proceeds going to broadcasters. Wireless trade group CTIA says that LA stations KLCS and KJLA have successfully shared the same six MHz radiofrequency channel, even combining two HD streams. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, just 7% of Americans still rely on over-the-air broadcast signals to watch television. That’s why the FCC is looking into auctioning off some broadcast spectrum.
