Software is becoming an increasingly important part of telecommunication networks and deployments as both wired and wireless carriers look to add functionality to operations while increasing simplicity and reducing costs. RCR Wireless News is keeping an eye on recent developments through its weekly “Software” wrap up.
–Huawei and Ericsson topped Infonetics Research’s latest ranking of policy management vendors, with both operators posting strong results in evaluated metrics.
Huawei scored a slim win over Ericsson, with Infonetics noting the vendor scoring top marks in “market share, market momentum and service provider feedback for total cost of ownership.” Ericsson was lauded for product reliability and service and support, and scored a share of the top spot for financial stability with Oracle and Amdocs.
“Huawei’s and Ericsson’s strong financials and market share growth, along with solid scores in the service provider feedback categories, propelled them to the top of the list,” explained Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence at Infonetics.
Oracle was No. 3 in the ranking, cited for its “extremely high score in financial stability,” though it was hit for a slowdown in revenue growth tied to its acquisition of Tekelec.
Amdocs was No. 4 on the list, with Infonetics complimenting its financial stability, but dinging it for “lower market share momentum and total cost of ownership marks.”

—Voxbone this week launched its Web Real-Time Communications service, designed to allow enterprises and communications providers to tap into Voxbone’s global private voice over Internet protocol network for WebRTC calling.
Voxbone noted that its offering includes the routing of traffic over its private network instead of the public Internet in a move to ensure quality and security, and that calls are delivered over a regular SIP trunk allowing for compatibility with legacy equipment.
—WeDo Technologies said it completed the implementation of its RAID 7 Revenue Assurance software with South African operator Vodacom. WeDo explained the software is designed to allow carriers to monitor and audit the provisioning and network service usage business processes.
Belinda Jones, Managing Executive at Vodacom, said: “As Vodacom continues to expand and embrace new innovative services such as LTE, mobile money and machine to machine, our processes will become increasingly intricate. To address these ever-evolving challenges it is therefore important to follow these business areas from a revenue assurance perspective as they continue to grow in importance.
“As well as ensuring that all dimensions of business assurance are covered, WeDo Technologies’ solution will enable us to create a set of custom internal reports which visually link the company’s reporting demands with our business performance in our constantly changing operations environment,” explained Belinda Jones, managing executive at Vodacom, in a statement. “This will help us to better analyze and extract the value of our data, as well as help our senior management make more informed decisions that improve and protect the current and future performance of our business.”
Financial terms of the deployment were not released.
–Wind River announced that the integration of its accelerated virtual switch into its Carrier Grade Communications Server that is designed for network functions virtualization had produced the ability to deliver 12 million packets per second to guest virtual machines. Wind River said the result was powered by two processor cores on an industry-standard server platform in a “real-world use case involving bi-directional traffic.”
Wind River noted that the VSwitch determines the bandwidth of network traffic processed by the virtualized network functions, and that by minimizing processor resources needed to power the VSwitch, telecom operators can reduce expenses.
–Sandvine released its Capacity Planning Dashboard as part of its Network Analytics platform, designed to provide insight into network resource performance trends across fixed, mobile and converged networks. The company said that analytics gleaned from the product allows telecom operators to identify and manage network congestion in an attempt to potentially defer capital spending without impacting network quality.
Sandvine noted that the platform also includes its Measured Business Benefits Calculator that allows for a return on investment calculation, including the ability to simulate quality scores, deferral periods and capacity upgrade costs.
