Crown Castle oDAS in Utah
Utah’s Department of Transportation expects to be able to monitor weather and traffic in Little Cottonwood Canyon, thanks to a new distributed antenna system it is installing with Crown Castle along Utah’s Route 210. Eleven antenna poles will be connected by 9 miles of underground fiber. The poles will house weather, traffic and avalanche equipment. Utah transportation officials say the improved connectivity will make it easier for hikers to reach 911 if they need to.
For providers of wireless infrastructure, outdoor DAS systems can be less predictable than indoor installations. A DAS operator can usually expect more than one service provider to pay for access to all the nodes on an indoor system. But when providers try to lease space on an outdoor system, they may find that mobile operators only want access to some of the nodes, or that they want new nodes which are not currently part of the system.

TE Connectivity DAS powers Champions Cup
U.S. soccer fans experiencing withdrawal now that the World Cup is over have just a few days to wait until the Champions Cup starts on July 24. The top clubs in the U.S. will compete around the country, and DAS will keep fans connected at many of the games.
TE Connectivity says its FlexWave Prism and InterReach Spectrum DAS has been deployed at 7 of the stadiums that will host Champions Cup games, including CitiField in Flushing, N.Y., FedEx Field in Hyattsville, Md., Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., and Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Mobilitie DAS in Columbus complemented by Wi-Fi
Mobilitie is supplementing its neutral host DAS system in Ohio’s Nationwide Arena with high-density Wi-Fi. The 263 Wi-Fi access points will serve hockey fans as well as press facilities, locker rooms, meeting spaces and offices. The network is expected to be fully operational by October 11, when the Columbus Blue Jackets face the New York Rangers for their first home game of the season.
“Fans attending games and special events now expect a fully immersive experience and the addition of this network furthers that active engagement and opens the door to a host of future applications,” said Larry Hoepfner, Columbus Blue Jackets executive VP of business operations.
