Survey: Mobile IT expenses expected to rise

A new survey sponsored by Oracle shows that enterprises expect that the resources devoted to mobile applications and devices will grow significantly in the next few years, and that companies prefer to keep their mobile app development internal.
The survey found that the average IT department spending per device, per employee was at $157 currently, and expected to grow to $242 in the next two years — up 54%.
The global survey of more than 400 IT management executives “showed a high commitment to mobility,” the survey concluded, but “little consensus about methods of mobile development and deployment, whether across industries or across geographies.”

In a statement accompany the survey results, Oracle noted that “enterprises face dual pressures when it comes to mobility: they must serve internal stakeholders to increase productivity, while also serving external customers to increase engagement. As a result, they struggle to keep pace with the rapid rate of mobile application development, both for the client and server side.”

Key findings of the report include:

  • Security continues to top the list of concerns for enterprise-wide adoption of mobile, and BYOD complicates the challenge. The survey found that 93% of respondents has concerns about data loss or security breaches related to mobile devices and BYOD.
  • 35% of midsize and large enterprises update their app portfolio monthly, and another 34% update them quarterly. A majority (82%) expect the rate of mobile app change to increase in the next two years.
  • In the next two years, respondents said their organizations would be focusing on lockdown of features (18% more than today), remote wiping of data (11% more than today), centralized updating and troubleshooting (11% more than today) and device data encryption (10% more then today).
  • More than 70% of IT time is spent on integration, security, quality assurance testing and design work, and 29% of IT development time spend on front-end mobile app development.
  • Respondents said that 44% of their app portfolio was internally developed.
  • 75% said that cloud or hybrid cloud was either somewhat or very important to mobile app deployment.

The survey was conducted by CIO Strategic Marketing Services and Triangle Publishing Services.
