CommScope outlines key trends ahead of CTIA

Philip Sorrells of CommScope outlined key trends that he thinks will be a focus at CTIA. Sorrells said that some of the most closely watched metrics for operators are ARPU, subscriber growth and investment. Two key themes he has identified are network modernization — helping operators add new technologies and new frequencies to existing assets — and squeezing more capacity out of the existing network.
CommScope is focusing on wideband antennas to help operators cover their bases. “If you’re not quite sure which frequencies you’ll use and which applications, you still have a pretty safe investment,” said Sorrells.
Remote radio heads atop towers and buildings are on the rise, Sorrells said. He said carriers need a reliable way to get power and fiber optic signal to the tower top, and that is a key focus for CommScope.
Interference mitigation is another priority. “With all these new bands you have really big opportunities to have the transmit and the receive bands of one operator to another operator interfere,” he said. “We have found a lot of really good custom applications where our team can go in and quickly design an interference mitigation filter, integrate that into a TMA or into a diplexer or some other piece of equipment that has to be on the cell site anyway, and use that to carve out that interferer. Every time we have done that we have helped that operator get 5 – 10 dB system performance back out of those sites.”
