Empirix acquires RAN real-time analytics company, Verios

Empirix has acquired real-time analytics company Verios Software & Systems for a big data approach to radio access network management and the user experience, with an eye toward creating what it called “the first service operation center (SOC) management solution,” and an end-to-end solution that reaches from the RAN to the core.

Empirix specializes in network performance visibility in real time, and sees Verios’ solutions as a complement to its IntelliSight big data analytics platform for network and service management. Verios also takes a big data-based approach to RAN visibility and management, designed to support the drill down to customer-level detail in high-volume, distributed networks. Verios’ partners include network test and measurement company Anritsu, which began offering Verios’ RAN Vision product, branded as eoCompass, three years ago.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Verios is based in Dublin, Ireland, and was founded in 2009.

“The radio access network is a vital, expensive and often unpredictable link in the mobile network. Verios provides insight that enables network operators to enhance service levels and predictability of service for their customers,” said John D’Anna, CEO of Empirix. “Verios’ solution provides complete visibility into radio access network operations, down to the individual user. Integrating that functionality into our IntelliSight platform will enable wireless providers to know exactly what their customers are experiencing, when and where. At the strategic level, that intelligence will help providers target their investments at the areas most likely to yield more revenue.”

Empirix said “conventional radio access network management solutions can only sample customer segments, and most cannot provide intelligence in real time.” The company added that it expects the combination of Empirix’s and Verios’ solutions to provide visibility into the network from the RAN to the core and “enable mobile service providers to identify and focus on their most profitable customer segments, most notably roaming customers who are likely to have service issues on the radio access segments of wireless networks.”

“Unifying our respective approaches to SOC — Empirix across the core network and Verios across the radio access network — will give providers immediate, detailed insight for responding to their most lucrative customer segments’ needs,” said Gerard Carroll, founder and CEO of Verios.

Empirix is owned by private equity investment firm Thoma Bravo, which acquired the company late last year.
