Beating the iPhone to market seems to be the goal for device makers this week, with Samsung, Huawei and Motorola all launching new devices ahead of Tuesday’s expected iPhone launch.
This week Motorola Mobility unveiled its newest Moto X smartphone. The 5.2-inch phone is just $99 on contract, but Motorola is clearly targeting customers who appreciate the finer things in life. It offers the Moto X with a real leather back, and the phone itself has a smooth aluminum body.
Earlier this week, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 4, including a curved screen edition called the Galaxy Note Edge, along with a virtual reality headset that can be used to turn the 5.7-inch Note 4 into a hands-free gaming device.
Huawei also launched a new smartphone this week — the giant 6-inch Ascend Mate 7. The Android phone boasts a two-day battery life and is set to launch in China and Europe this quarter. Apparently taking a page from the iPhone’s playbook, Huawei has included a sapphire glass display and a fingerprint sensor on the Mate 7.
On Tuesday, Apple will capture the attention of the wireless industry and the rest of the world as well, even if the company only launches some of the products that have been forecast. Among the predictions: new larger screen iPhones with mobile payments capabilities, sapphire screens and support for voice-over-Wi-Fi. In addition, Apple is widely expected to launch a wearable device, nicknamed the iWatch, as well as possibly a new iPad Air.
