Back from a week at Super Mobility Week in the United States and a whirlwind of meetings with software, hardware, component, antenna and you=name-it vendors. I was amazed at how busy this show was. At a time when it seems shows are having trouble getting attendees, there was plenty of activity in Las Vegas.
One company which I literally stumbled across as I was roving the floor was Evutec. Although a different topic for RCR Wireless News, I was impressed by their sleek styling and commitment to the environment. Evutec bills itself as Ecology United with Technology.
Most phone cases are made of plastic. Potentially not as durable as other options and we all know plastic isn’t a positive influence on the environment. Although many phone cases can be recycled and used for new plastic products, we’re still propagating the use of petroleum-based plastics. If you look through the recent news about alternatives you see phone case solutions of wood, waterproof paper, and a new technology call AirCarbon. AirCarbon claims to not only reduce the use of petroleum in plastic manufacturing, but also emit fewer greenhouse gases.
Sprint has already announced it will be carrying phone cases based on the AirCarbon technology and Dell is doing a trial for the packaging used with Latitude notebooks shipped in the Unites States and Canada.
On the technology side of its statement, Evutec has an innovative solution to protecting your smartphone investment, Kevlar. We all know Kevlar from the bulletproof vests we see in the movies, and no it won’t make your phone bulletproof — I asked. This provides a strong and slim form factor and is also friendlier to the environment than petroleum-based plastics. There seem to be some benefits to the use of Kevlar vs. traditional plastics, but it is still not free of environmental impact. These cases are great looking, stronger than steel and very lightweight. And if you tend to drop your phone a lot, it might be an option to help your smartphone survive and it certainly looks better then some other products making these claims.
On the ecology side, Evutec has wooden phone cases with Kevlar fibers woven within them. Using real wood makes them eco-friendly, while the inclusion of Kevlar makes them strong.
With so many options for smartphone cases on the market it’s difficult to differentiate, especially when you’re not the lowest cost option. Smartphone cases are $39.99. But for the techies among us and those wanting to help with the environment, they offer some new alternatives.
