SHANGHAI — Germany came out on top in a new ranking of national information and communications technology competitiveness, according to a report released by Huawei at this week’s Cloud Congress in Shanghai. The report pointed to Germany’s strong commitment and ongoing investment in ICT development, resulting in a market with competitive vitality.
The report and rankings included data from 25 developing and emerging countries that account for 78% of global gross domestic product and 68% of the world’s population; and 10 industries, including finance, manufacturing, education, transportation and logistics. The survey concluded that national competitiveness depended on connectivity.
“Germany’s outstanding ICT infrastructure and relative affordability of access pushes it to the top. The ICT drives Germany’s industry 4.0 targeting 30% gains in productivity,” explained William Xu, chief strategy and marketing officer at Huawei.
Among developing countries, the report named Chile, Kenya and Egypt as those which had the highest growth momentum.
“Everybody is looking for connectivity. Connection is the new normal,” explained Xu.

According to the company, by 2025 there will be 100 billion connections, at which point the Internet will reach its industrial stage, being the basis of connections between people and things. Intelligent sensors are forecast to account for 90% of all connections, with the increase being attributed to enterprises becoming enabled by the Internet.
While the demand side requires more mobile broadband penetration and application adoption, Huawei said the supply side needs to focus on the Internet bandwidth per-capita and the affordability of the connectivity.
“National competitiveness depends on connectivity,” added Xu.
