AT&T Mobility over the weekend turned up the competitive pressure for data-hungry customers, announcing a limited-time offer to double the amount of data in its Mobile Share Value plans of 15 gigabytes and higher.
The promotion, which runs through the end of October, calls for the 15 GB bucket to now include 30 GB for the same $130 per month, up to the 50 GB plan now including 100 GB for $375 per month. Those plans also include unlimited domestic voice calling and unlimited international messaging for those messages that originate on AT&T Mobility’s network.
Customers can add up to 10 lines of service to share each bucket, with smartphones on the carrier’s Next device financing plan or already paid for devices charged at $15 per line, or subsidized smartphones on a traditional two-year contract charged $40 per line.
AT&T Mobility’s move comes as competition looks to remain robust in the pricing space. Sprint last month altered most of its rate plans following a management change that saw long-time CEO Dan Hesse replaced by board member and Brightstar founder Marcelo Claure. The new multiline rate plans allow consumers to combine 10 lines of service with unlimited voice calling and messaging, along with various shared data buckets ranging from 600 megabytes ($20) up to 60 GB ($225). Customers then pay $25 per month, per line for non-subsidized phones tied to data plans of 16 GB or less; $15 per month, per line for non-subsidized phones tied to data plans between 20 GB and 60 GB; or $40 per month, per line for subsidized phones across all data plans. Non-subsidized tablets can be added for $10 per month to any data package, while non-subsidized mobile broadband devices will run $20 per month. The non-subsidized devices are tied to monthly installment payments through Sprint’s Easy Pay offering, while the subsidized devices are tied to a two-year contract.
T-Mobile US noted earlier this month that it witnessed the greatest amount of postpaid customer growth in August than during any month in company history. That announcement followed a number of rate plan changes instituted by the company over the summer. T-Mobile US was also recently declared the largest gainer in iPhone market share connected to the recent launch of the latest Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices.
AT&T is set to announce third quarter financial results on Oct. 22.
