Telecom posts mixed employment stats

The most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers showed the country’s unemployment rate dropped below 6% in September, highlighting a continued trend of improving employment statistics. However, for the telecommunications space, the numbers remain mixed.

According to BLS statistics, there was a drop of about 100 communications equipment manufacturing jobs during the month, with around 4,200 positions lost over the past year. Manufacturing jobs tied to semiconductors and electronic components decreased by 600 positions in September, and are down 8,800 positions over the past year.

On the upside, 4,600 jobs overall were added across the telecommunications sector in September, and 5,800 jobs added over the past year. The sector overall ended September with approximately 863,000 jobs on the books.

The telecom segment could see a boost in qualified applicants following a recent $450 million pledge from the White House for job-driven training grants, with $5 million of that for programs targeting wireless infrastructure. The program will see wireless training programs funded through the Department of Labor as part of the curriculum at Virginia State University and at South Carolina’s Aiken Technical College, which is already the certification partner for Warriors 4 Wireless.
