Apple is reportedly stretching its resources to meet demand for the new iPhones. Just one day after the company announced a media event that is expected to include a new iPad launch, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is delaying iPad production so that its Chinese suppliers can focus on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
The new iPhones have met with unprecedented demand, despite reports that some of them bend or pull facial hairs. Meanwhile demand for Apple’s iPads has been slipping, and recent reports of stronger demand for Macintosh computers suggest that Apple’s tablets may not be destined to replace its portable computers.
Asian news sources are saying that Apple is shifting production resources to the larger-screen iPhone 6 Plus, and that the company may have underestimated demand for the 5.5-inch model.
For carriers, the availability of the new iPhones is a key driver of upgrades and retail store traffic. Many customers may be willing to wait for their new iPhones, but carriers will be impacted if customers wait too long. The carriers need more device revenue to offset service revenue that is being eroded by data price wars.
