Workforce: 3 questions on Rohde & Schwarz careers

Test and measurement company Rohde & Schwarz is one of the largest test and measurement companies globally. It currently has openings in the U.S. as well as Germany, Singapore, the Czech Republic, and other countries for engineers, interns, instrument calibration work, marketing and more. Privately held Rohde & Schwarz is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and focuses on test and measurement as well as broadcasting, secure communications, radiomonitoring and radiolocation.

RCR Wireless News asked the company for perspectives on three questions related to Rohde & Schwarz careers. These answers come from Anne Cowper, head of human resources at Rohde & Schwarz USA.

1.        What skills are most in demand right now?

Customers today want solutions to their problems — and not just another piece of test equipment. This requires access to our processes and people, who are very technical and adept to solving our customer’s problem, which is no easy task today given the multitude of technologies and applications and the depth of understanding required. For application engineers, we typically look for a strong knowledge of RF and wireless technologies, such as LTE, LTE-Advanced, VoLTE, IMS, etc. Experience in the Test and Measurement industry is also a plus. Equally important are the intangibles and people skills, such as customer interaction, customer focus, passion for the job, and a strong desire to make our customers successful.

2.        What would you say are the most useful certifications for workers in test and measurement?

Generally, we don’t look for specific certifications. Our service engineers typically have associates degrees in electronics, almost all of our sales people and application engineers have electrical engineering degrees and many of our design positions require advanced degrees.

3.        What are the top three trends/areas of activity in test and measurement right now, from Rohde & Schwarz’s perspective?

1) The ability to rapidly address new technologies and standards; 2) reducing test costs and 3) reducing test complexity.
