Cisco adds HD voice to Wi-Fi access points
Cisco says it’s ready to help mobile operators offer voice over Wi-Fi. The network equipment giant is adding HD voice to its popular Wi-Fi access points, and says that now millions of Wi-Fi devices will be able to make voice calls.

Voice-over-Wi-Fi is a double-edged sword for wireless carriers. It can help them retain customers by offering better service because they can offload customers to Wi-Fi when the cellular network is overloaded. But carriers don’t get to charge users for the minutes they spend on Wi-Fi networks or for the data they use over Wi-Fi.

Cisco wants carriers to invest in their own Wi-Fi access points to complement the cellular network. The company says its Aironet 1570 is the longest-range Wi-Fi access point on the market, and is fast enough to download the entire Star Wars movie collection in less than a minute.
