DETROIT – Earlier this week, Verizon announced Verizon Vehicle, signalling another mobile operator to up its telematics game through aftermarket solutions.
RCR highlighted this story on the day of the announcement and yesterday I had a chance to learn more about it at the Detroit Auto Show. The trend to offer connectivity in conjunction with an aftermarket telematics solution seems to be gaining momentum in the last six months if you consider the announcements from Vodafone and Telefonica in this area. I believe this signals some early steps for mobile operators to begin using the power of their network and distribution channels to move up the value chain in the connected car market. I am happy to see this move taking place.
These solutions are not one-size-fits-all offers. Verizon has raised the bar by taking diagnostics to a more personalized level. Beyond just identifying that there could be a mechanical problem with your car, it offers the potential causes and costs for repair – a powerful tool when faced with an auto mechanic who might see the opportunity to add a little extra to the bill. In addition, one of Verizon’s expert mechanics will be available to explain the issue at no additional cost.
Expected to be available in the second quarter of the year, the comprehensive list of features includes:
- GPS-directed pinpoint roadside assistance
- Automatic urgent incident alert system
- One-Button SOS assistance
- Auto health system with predictive diagnostics
- Mechanic’s hotline staffed with A.S.E. Certified Mechanics
- Parking and meter tools help drivers find where they left their vehicle
- Maintenance alerts inform vehicle owners of scheduled maintenance
- Stolen vehicle location assistance
- Travel and repair savings offers
The company is currently taking pre-launch requests from customers.
