SK Telecom under investigation
The Korea Communications Commission said it will probe an alleged illegal subsidy case centering on SK Telecom. The carrier is accused of using illegal subsidies to lure customers away from other operators.
The probe comes after South Korean carrier, KT, submitted documents claiming that SK Telecom used illegal marketing. SKT has denied the claims.
KT has also filed a complaint in court to stop SK Telecom from claiming to be the first carrier to commercialize tri-band LTE-Advanced services.
Vodafone bringing 3G to 40 rural U.K. communities
Vodafone UK has revealed a list of 40 new locations that will receive 3G as part of its Rural Open Sure Signal Scheme. The plan will ultimately bring 3G service to more than 100 rural areas that coverage currently doesn’t reach.
The program works by using femtocells to create mini networks. More than a dozen communities have installed the Rural Open Sure Signal technology, and Vodafone executives report that all are receiving increased connectivity.
Huawei lands two contracts worth $120M
Huawei Technologies has reportedly landed two contracts worth a combined $120 million. The contracts, with Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, are to upgrade the companies’ wireless networks. The updated networks will help the carriers offer new data services.
BT acquisition of EE going smoothly
Negotiations between BT and EE over the acquisition of the U.K. carrier are reportedly on track. The German Manager Magazine reports that due diligence has not revealed any surprises within EE.
EE is owned by jointly by Deutsche Telekom and Orange.
