Undisclosed number of cuts reported across various IBM locations
Computing and technology giant IBM is reportedly cutting jobs across the organization, although the exact number appears to be in question.
An initial report from Forbes indicated the cuts could impact more than 100,000 jobs, or about one-fourth of IBM’s total workforce. IBM denied that number in a follow-up story from USA Today, noting that the previously announced job cuts would impact “several thousand.”
IBM, which recently reported a $600 million charge tied to “workforce rebalancing,” told Forbes that it currently has “15,000 job openings around the world for new skills in growth areas such as cloud, analytics, security, and social and mobile technologies. This is evidence that IBM continues to remix its skills to match where we see the best opportunities in the marketplace.”
While the number of job cuts has not been set, reports from IBM’s various operations indicate they have begun. News reports out of North Carolina, New York, Missouri and Colorado have disclosed an unknown number of job cuts. According to a Communications Workers of America site dedicated to IBM workers, the layoffs were announced beginning Wednesday.
IBM has increased its attention to the telecom space, announcing last year a high-profile partnership with Apple targeting enterprise mobility.
RCR Wireless News spoke with Robert Fox, global industry leader for telecommunications, media and entertainment at IBM, on the partnership and how it will impact IBM’s plans for the telecom space.
IBM also has announced a number of strategic initiatives and partnerships tied to its analytics capabilities and wireless network infrastructure.
IBM last year reportedly told some employees that they needed to spend one day per week in training to develop their skills in mobile, cloud, analytics and social media. However, that move would see a 10% salary cut for those employees.
