CenturyLink boosts cloud platform with Orchestrate purchase

Orchestrate brings DaaS capabilities to CenturyLink Cloud

Regional telecommunications provider CenturyLink bolstered its cloud platform with the acquisition of Orchestrate, which focuses on managed database services designed for rapid application development. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

CenturyLink said the deal will enhance its cloud platform by adding database-as-a-service capabilities as well as brings on board Orchestrate’s services team that is set to join CenturyLink’s product development and technology organization. As part of the acquisition, Orchestrate’s CEO Antony Falco, CTO Ian Plosker and VP of engineering Dave Smith are joining CenturyLink.

The Orchestrate platform targets enterprises with a managed NoSQL database that is said to provide full-text search, time series, graph and key-value storage through a single API that combines “the developer-friendliness and ease of use of NoSQL databases with the reliability of distributed databases.” CenturyLink earlier this year began offering Orchestrate’s platform through its cloud service.

“CenturyLink Cloud features one of the most sophisticated service infrastructures in the market, with a great interface and lots of options for managing complex workflow and third-party applications in the cloud,” Falco said. “Orchestrate’s database service takes the same approach to delivering cost efficiency and ease of use. Enterprise customers are increasingly expecting one global platform to provide these services.”

The move continues CenturyLink’s software push, which included its acquisition of predictive analytics and big data solutions provider Cognilytics; the launch of its Hyperscale cloud servers; the availability of automated cloud-based Hadoop solutions; and recent announcement to tap Cyan for its Blue Planet NFV Orchestrator to provide network function virtualization-based services to CenturyLink’s enterprise customers.
