This week on HetNet Happenings, RCR Wireless News Managing Editor Sean Kinney talks with long time telecom industry analyst Jeff Kagan about carrier trends and the continuing convergence of telecom and cable/pay television providers.
Kagan, a wireless analyst and consultant for 25 years, is the newest member of the RCR Wireless News editorial team; he publishes a weekly column dissecting the past, present and future of wireless.
Kagan and Kinney take a look back at how the last decade has shaped the wireless industry, particularly as it relates to the comparable success of the top four U.S. carriers: Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T.
Drawing from material in a recent column, Kagan pins the discussion to a “wave of change” analogy.
“AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless continued to update and lead the smartphone and wireless data space,” Kagan said.
“Sprint and T-Mobile US missed that opportunity and struggled for years. Sprint with Nextel and T-Mobile US, which simply missed the move toward wireless data services. Now both Sprint and T-Mobile US have started to grow again and that is great for the competitive marketplace. We want to see more, not fewer, competitors trying to win our business.”
