NFV/SDN Reality Check – Episode 15: OpenDaylight Project on SDN expansion

On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check, RCR Wireless News spoke with Neela Jacques, executive director of the OpenDaylight Project on the continued evolution of network functions virtualization and software-defined networking, and the impact open source collaborations have had on that evolution.

Jacques provided some background on the OpenDaylight Project, which recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. The organization was founded out of the Linux Foundation with and overall goal in taking on the issue of simplifying network management, a challenge that plagues the majority of today’s IT teams.

Jacques also touched on some of the challenges the organization has seen crop up among the SDN and NFV communities, including getting telecom operators to buy into the open source process. Jacques noted a number of telecom operators, like AT&T and Telefonica have jumped on board the process, which has allowed those entities to take on a leadership status among their peers.

The Open Platform Network Function Virtualization Project, which is a sister organization to OpenDaylight out of the Linux Foundation and more focused on NFV deployments, was also lauded for the recent release of its first open source Arno platform. Moving forward, Jacques expects growing acceptance of open source platforms among telecom operators as they continue to deploy SDN and NFV technologies.
